In the last week, mr. Chubbs has found he can get his bigger bear on the couch where all the pillow are and find numerous  positions. He'll go 40 minutes or until we finally take it away from him.

The plan has been to neuter after 6 months but then I'd told the breeder I'd hold off until she could see if he'd give her a male to continue his daddy's genes. (Chubbs has been the only one from his litters so far)

Now I'm tempted to renige on that offer because the boy is turning into 'Sir Humps-alot' and we also have a little girl coming home soon that won't be as agile as the cat.

I've added a poll but am looking for opines to help me make up my mind. ( backing out of the offer to the breeder violates being a man of my word Sad )
thanks

Edited -  I guess I can't modify the poll.  one option should read  HEALED  not hilled.  Roll Eyes

Blaine - I would back out of the option with the breeder.  Health reasons alone would be why I would do it.   Wink

You're getting a female puppy, right??  I would definitely neuter him.  Unless you want that poor little puppy to become his new Bear toy, you have to Smiley  I have already had male dogs try and mount my little Baby, and I feel so bad when they try that!  You really will have a more pleasant dog if you neuter him, that's my opinion Smiley

With all of my dogs, I have seen no difference with humping after getting them spayed or neutered. I asked my vet about it one day since my girls were humping the other girls and even the cats  Roll Eyes and she said that they hump to determine their pack order. Plus my husbands male Rottie that is 8 years old still humps everything that moves and he has been neutered since he was just a wee little pup.

thanks to all so far.  I'd asked the neutering question earlier when waiting for Chubbs and was quite convinced to do it for health reasons, if nothing else.

if it's just a pack order thing, then there's not a shred of doubt in fuzzybear's mind. Smiley

neutering curtailed auggie's humping pretty much right away.  he's never humped his sisters. once in a blue moon he will hump his sheep skin ball, but i think it is because he loves it SO much  Roll Eyes

what's much weirder than humping is that when auggie takes a good sniff of his sister's privates, his muzzle starts twitching like crazy and he gets a very funny expression on his face....  poor little dude  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Tongue Tongue

Blaine...Stitches is quite a fertile stud dog and I have never had a problem with him humping and Mini is almost 14 months old and he doesn't hump either.  I dont know why some dogs are humpers and other dogs do not.  I think in your shoes I would be more concerned for future territorial marking/peeing.  Now that Chubbs is 7 mos old, I think he is old enough to be collected and if your breeder would like to use Chubbs for future breedings she could always collect and freeze semen and then you could neuter soon after.  This would satisfy her need to continue her line and you wouldn't have to worry about your original agreement being soured - not to mention you could get Chubbs neutered sooner than later.

Edit...check with your vet on the age for the collection...I am only going by an AKC policy for the valid age to sire litters.

Wembley's humping motion was only ever a dominance thing....he never actually grabbed hold of anything, he would just do the motion while standing in front of you.  Having said that he only ever did it to females that ignored him!  His bits are constantly hanging out but I don't think he even realises!  Cheesy

As for making them calmer, the day after surgery we called the vets and asked them if they had accidentally put an extra set in, instead of taking them out, as he was a complete b**tard for a while afterwards!

Susan, Sharon and Jus... thanks and I'm LMAO here in the cube.

Interesting twist on collecting now.
There isn't a real 'deal' to sour. Just an offer I made without being asked and with no strings attatched (certainly don't want or need another (3rd) dog and not interested in any other considerations).  Personal issue about not following through on something I said I would.

Sooner than later I guess. He'll lose his marbles by the end of the month so he'll have a month to heal before Lizzy comes home.

I think that male dogs raised in a pack environment with intact females are "trained" by the adult females how to behave appropriately. We've never had a problem with intact males "humping" inappropriately. And that is probably because those "crabby bitches" make it really clear when their advances aren't welcome.  Wink Humping is often related to pack order like "bwets_angel" mentioned, but I think sometimes it is just due to boredom. The worst "humpers" I know are females! Kate likes to climb into her "toy box" on occasion and will hump her toys. But she only does it for brief periods of time. I think it is kind of funny so I don't scold her. I imagine that if I made more of a fuss about it, she'd stop.

By the way, most of our male dogs that we've raised aren't mature enough to be "collected" until they are around 10 months of age, sometimes even a few months older than that. But then our bloodline is known to be "slow maturers". Just thought I'd let you know that sexual maturity can vary quite a bit in Bulldogs.

Maybe the best thing to do for now is to consider the humping an undesirable behavior in the same way you consider chewing on the furniture to be. It really is just one more thing you need to train Chubbs not to do. You will have to train him not to do it in the same way you taught him not to do other things that you considered inappropriate behavior on his part. Usually this kind of thing gets better as they get a little older. Like Sharon said, territorial marking might be more of an issue down the road if you don't neuter Chubbs, especially if there will be another dog in the house, but that isn't necessarily a given either. Many intact males do not mark in their own homes, Graham doesn't. The biggest problem is that once they start these kinds of behaviors, they can become bad habits and those can be hard to break even if the dog is neutered.

Was your offer not to neuter Chubbs made after you had him home and not part of the original contract? If so, I'd talk to the breeder and explain that you have had second thoughts over this being the best thing for Chubbs and your family and then go ahead an neuter Chubbs whenever you feel the time is best for your own family. If they are truly concerned about the welfare of their puppy, they should understand your position. Having an additional puppy in the house changes things that weren't applicable when you first made the offer.

Oh, and about "continuing the family genes". If they still have the Chubbs' sire, they really don't need Chubbs. There is no reason the "family genes" can't be passed on down via a female out of Chubbs' sire. Don't feel you "owe" them just because you were feeling generous one day.

Here's Kate "caught in the act".  Wink

Oops, my post and yours, Blaine must have gone through at the same time. I see you already answered my question about the  offer being a part of your contract. Like I said before, just explain the situation to them. It isn't like you are reneging just to be difficult. Things change. You just do what you think is best and don't feel guilty about it.

Thank you Rita on all points.  The 2 quoted above really nails it.
I was just so happy with Chubbs that I made the offer to hold off when she mentioned they were kind of regretting not keeping Chubbs

Funny you shared a pic of Kate along with the story!!  Grin  I've been wanting to post pics or even a video clip in case someone thought I was exaggerating. I thought it might get me censored though.  Grin
I've had the girls and visitors turn away immediately if he ties to grab a leg. It's worked and his attempts on people are rare now but it's getting much harder for the girls to break his grip. Sad

November 9th,  8am  "Hasta la Vista Huevos!!"

Vet said it's $199 and pick him up the same day unless I want him to stay overnight.

I just saw an Adam Sandler movie 'Click'  that Vangie rented last night. That big duck... I had one just like it hanging from the rafters in the garage for a couple of years and thought it looked kind of neat above the beer fridge. It was scaring Vangie and I just tossed it last year. Had I know dog(s) were coming back into the picture, we'd be able to at least keep Chubbs and his wanton ways off the couch.  Grin
