Important:
Animals do not have palpable carotid pulses. You can only obtain a femoral pulse in the inguinal crease.  Palpate carefully on a conscious dog!

I have done the doggie heimlich maneuver before (on a couple of our many pound puppies growing up) and it does work like a charm.  It was sort of instinct, because I really didn't know what to do for a dog, so I was very happy to see that! Grin

Twice a year at the animal shelter that I work at, holds a pet CPR class and they get about 40 people for the turn out. They all say it is so informative and a couple of people have saved thier dogs lives from that class.

 I think that everyone that owns an animal should be knowledgable of the CPR for them.
