A Bulldog Owns Me

« Reply #17 on: April 04, 2007, 05:43:08 PM »

Personally,  The next one I get, I would prefer a dark mask.  I have owned two mostly white bullies and they are a pain with acne in the lighter skin around the face and chin.  I heard the darker skin around the face is less likely to have those problems.  But, its your call because you have to be satisfied with the looks.

Your new puppy is very cute.

I am somewhat concerned about the care (or lack thereof) that is being given to the sire of the litter.  It looks like he has a huge abcess or tumor on his foot in one of those pictures and his nails don't look like they've been trimmed in a while.   Does this breeder keep his dogs outside?  Are they in kennels or do they live in the house?

They have their kennels but he told me that they are let out to play often, the sire has his own private "apartment" next to the house, it's a big room with his crate and a lot of space to run around.  I was going to ask him about the nails but I forgot.

YOU HAVE TO HAVE A BULLDOG TO UNDERSTAND...

« Reply #24 on: April 06, 2007, 10:35:58 AM »

Your new puppy is very cute.

I am somewhat concerned about the care (or lack thereof) that is being given to the sire of the litter.  It looks like he has a huge abcess or tumor on his foot in one of those pictures and his nails don't look like they've been trimmed in a while.   Does this breeder keep his dogs outside?  Are they in kennels or do they live in the house?

Thanks Jodi for voicing my concerns as well...I was concerned with the sire as well...And them nails! Also thought they looked on the dirty side...And the wrinkles on the brother was crusty looking...Which also bothered me...

The pups are adorable though~ But...Again the care given to the dogs he owns concerns me.  Undecided

You mentioned that the pup wasn't registered...Due to him not getting around to it...Well...I don't wish to get on this breeder for I personally don't know him. But he also looked as if he didn't have the time to properly care for his dogs...That really bothered me about the sire's foot...What's wrong with it...Abscess or Tumor...Has it had proper vet care seen to this issue. Or what? And them nails...I about cried seeing them so long...

I  just pray that the puppies find their way into homes where they owners don't think that the condition is normal to have nails that long or leave their wrinkles uncared for. For not caring for their wrinkles can cause major issues! And that concerned me...

But...I also remember getting our first bulldog...He was from a Back yard breeder... Undecided At the time I didn't think much about them being in kennels and the breeding dogs and a few studs actually tied to dog boxes...I seen the pup that stole my heart...And I got him. Do I regret that he was a sickly pup...Well I would have rather he been a healthy one...But I loved him none the less...He lived with us for 9 yrs. But was really sickly...We had a medicine container with a notebook explaining if this happens give him this per scription...And so on...

We learned with that experience...We learned next time to be more choosier...And really picked apart the breeders making sure that care of their dogs were a priority...And that they were also raised in their home...Instead of outdoors. Though one had a kennel...It was a castle in you seen it...AND CLEAN! They were show breeders...And their dogs were cared for and clean...nails and wrinkles not crusty...(Stains can appear...but when it's crusty I believe is when they are not cleaned properly or very often)

I hope you take my experience...And not think I am being harsh...You said that he has healthy pups...But his sire dog I would be asking about...I am concerned with that foot...To say you have healthy pups but have a sire whom looks as if he needs vet care concerned me.

There are more breeders out there...That pup is cute...And if you have your heart set on that particular one...I don't blame you...For I fell into the same situation when I was so "hyped" over owning a bulldog pup. That I had blinders on...And it was quite costly in the long run...But I LOVED MY JAKE...And wouldn't have traded him for the world! But...Tank and Sarge our current bulldogs...I was more picking with them...And health issues haven't been nearly as expensive.

When I was searching for a pup and found Sarge...I had tears galore! I was so discouraged in my search...and he fell into my lap...And I was blessed...He's a year old...And hasn't had any major issues not even an ear infection! I am glad I was picky...And he's a great bulldog... Grin

But again...If you have this pup CHOSEN as yours...Just be aware that the conditions of the breeder took care of his bulldogs. And...Go with the knowledge that they could have been cared for a lot better. And give this puppy the best life he could possibly imagine. But also know...When breeders don't care that great for their dogs...A lot of people call them back yard breeders...And...I shared my experience with you...I am not stating that this pup won't be healthy...But just want to awaken you to the possibilities that financially just be prepared...I would get insurance on the pup if they offer it where you live. From the get go...This will help if the pup should later show signs of issues needing medical care...That they would be covered.

Good luck...And again...I don't wish to come across harsh...But...I know what it's like to hold that bulldog pup for the first time...From a back yard breeder whom didn't care for their dogs well...I wouldn't have changed things other than wish him a healthier pup...But loved him I did...So what ever you do...GOOD LUCK... Kiss

You mentioned you weren't looking for a pup with a mask...Which I am a Brindle and White in color fanatic...Though love all bulldogs...I just prefer that color over most.

Here's a picture of my Sarge...After many tears of frustration of not finding the right breeder...Or them just not "feeling" quite right. I was emailed about Sarge from a well known breeder. That I had heard nothing but positive things from by many show breeders even. And it happened so fast...I got an email on a Friday...And we drove three hours to pick him up with a snow storm warning of possibly up to 15 inches of snow...(I had originally wanted a spring pup)the very next day. But...It just "felt" right. Sight unseen...We went and got him...I was quite taken with his nose rope...I hadn't thought I liked bulldogs with large nose ropes. (The thick wrinkle over his nose) But was smitten from first sight....So...You mentioned not wanting a mask...But seeing him...Was it like I was...Your heart was stolen from first sight? That was my case when I seen Sarge~ Grin If that the case...You might as well get this pup...When he has your heart~ Wink

Here's my Sarge...Nose rope and all~ Cheesy

I looked (and played with  Grin ) 3 other bulldogs of his and they were in great shape, nails perfectly trimmed and everything(you can see two of them in the pictures), so I'm a bit puzzled as well about why the sire had such long nails. I'm sure the abcess or whatever it is, is under control, it's not like he has a bunch of kennels far away from the house and he only has them to breed them, the sire is his personal dog and he lives in the house with him, the other ones do live in kennels outside the house, but it was obvious he cares for them and the bullies looked very happy and healthy.

The only thing that he did mention is that since they like to play a lot outside, they get dirty and he doesn't bathe them as often as he should, but I think that's more of a personal matter and has more to do with the fact that he doesn't mind dealing with a dog that well, smells like a dog  Cheesy .

The sire is 10 years old so I'm sure he has been taken care of properly, otherwise I doubt he would have lived for so long.

I will definately ask him about the nails the next time I go there.

Although the nails are a concern, there are other issues to take into consideration.  If the breeder used a 10 year old dog to sire a litter, I am very skeptical of that.  Male dogs do maintain fertility longer than females, but 10 years old is REALLY pushing it to sire a litter.  Also, the dog looks like he could have entropion in one or both eyes.

Is it accurate that the breeder did not register the litter?  If the dogs are purebred, I don't understand why he wouldn't register the litter.  The cost to register a litter with AKC is $25.00 base and $2.00 per puppy (last time I checked), so I can't imagine that it is a cost issue.  Did the breeder show you the registration papers and pedigrees of the parents?  Are you sure they aren't closely related?

Please don't take our questions to mean that we are picking on you or this breeder--that is NOT the case!  We certainly don't want to alarm you, but there are several of us here on the board that have bought puppies from breeders who turned out not to be very reputable as we are trying to spare you from that experience.

I don't live in the US and I don't know how much it costs to register a litter/puppies here, he said it was a timing issue, he got caught up in some problems with his other business (he owns a sporting goods store) and he missed the time window allowed to register the mating, here if you don't do this you can't register the puppies afterwards, regardless of the fact the they are purebred.

As with most things in my country, forging a dog's papers is not a difficult thing to do, so they really don't mean much, trusting and knowing the reputation of the breeder is much more important to ensure that you are getting a purebred puppy; in this particular case, he could've easily forged the papers and sold the puppies for a much higher price but he chose not to, this tells me he really is a serious breeder/person (along with the fact that he was recvcomended to me by one of the most reputable breeders in the country).

He will give me copies of the parents papers along with the medical chart of the puppy when I go to pick him up.

I have as much information and testimonies about this breeder as I will ever be able to find about any other one, I went to his house, talked with him, saw his dogs and he does seem to be the real deal.  Could he be lying? sure, anything is possible, but tere is no such thing as being 100% sure about something/someone, based on what I researched, I think he's a good choice.

But regardless of this, I appreciate your concerns and I know that one must be extra careful when looking for a bulldog breeder because of all the puppy mills and unscrupulous breeders out there, I know you all mean well  Wink .

  Ill keep you guys posted.

I attached above part of a quote you posted earlier. It's odd that the dog that is his "personal dog" is in such care. One would expect he would be even MORE taken care of a dog that is in one's home...

Quote
the dog looks like he could have entropion in one or both eyes.

That quote was taken from Lovabullwrinkles/Jodi...She is a breeder in the USA...She is familar with English Bulldogs I would think...More so than I am since I am not a breeder.

I understand your not from the US...And...I would think to maybe ask whom his vet is and ask for vet records of the dame and sire used...To get an idea of their health possibly...?...Entropion with the eyes I believe is genetic...Just a thought...

I know that pup has your heart...And...It still needs a home no matter whom takes the chance with this breeder. If your willing to take the chance with him...Then I think your doing so understanding that others are seeing "signs" that might make one leary...But...I myself have been in that same situation...And well it was our first bulldog...So...I felt what you maybe feeling. And I think that's the case...You got to HOLD this pup. And he stole your heart...

He needs a home...And I think your willing to take your chances. Good luck with that pup...And please plan on sharing TONS of pictures with us as he grows~ Wink Kiss
