Winston's Mommy

« on: October 18, 2004, 12:58:08 AM »

Apparently this is nothing major but it gave me quite the scare.  He split a nail today from running and jumping around like a lunatic and I think I was in more pain than him.  Since I was practically in tears, my husband raced him to University of Penn's Animal ER and they removed the nail and wrapped the paw up.  They said we can remove the dressing tomorrow and told me to stop in to my regular vets office for a check up to make sure there is no swelling or infection. Winston seems to be doing fine but he's not happy about the bandage.  He tried to start chewing it off so I had to put the E-collar on which he is even less happy about.  My poor baby had to have a thermometer stuck in his butt so he tried to bite the vet at the ER, which is so unlike Winston, he loves his regular vet.  Has anyone else had anything like this happen?  We just had him groomed and had his nails clipped 2 weeks ago so I'm surprised that it split so easily.

Oh poor Winston!  I'm sure he was just crabby from being scared and hurt and somewhere new.  You can only deal with so much at one time Wink
I hope his foot is better soon.

He must have caught the nail on something.  A friend's Bullie got his nail split by catching it on the metal baseboard of a sliding door.  He tore a big part of the nail off, so it can happen.

We see this occasionally at the vet clinic where I work. It even happened to my family's dog, Rascal, years ago. Rascal has since crossed over to the Bridge. Cry He was our dog from when I was in middle school until I was in college. A wonderful terrier mix that everyone loved.
Usually the vet will put them on antibiotics, so I would stop in to your vet as soon as you are able. I hope Winston feels better! Kisses to Winston.  Kiss Kiss

Thank you all!  Winston saw his vet yesterday and they gave him antibiotics and told us to keep the paw wrapped up until this evening.  He's gonna be thrilled when I take it off, I'm sure.  I couldn't resist taking a pic of him with it on though so here it is... (I'm a bad mommy!)

He looks to me like he's thinking "Okay first you put this thing on my owie foot, and now you're taking a picture?  You're sooo waking up with chewed shoes..."

So cute, but I do hope he feels better soon.   Kiss  kisses to him.

LMAO sweet_pea!  He probably is thinking that but he no longer has access to my shoes or my closet for that matter.  That door is kept shut at all times.  I think he thinks it's an exit or something, LOL!

He's been playing the sympathy card all day too!  We tried to take the wrap off of his foot but he immediately wanted to investigate the injury and promptly started gnawing at it so the bandage is back on.

He goes back to the vet on Thursday so we'll see what they say.  He obviously cannot be trusted without the bandage so it's staying on until we see the vet.
