A few minutes ago I was playing tug with Manolito, he's almost 1 year old and he weighs about 23 kilos, anyway, I spent about 10 minutes hanging on to the toy we were playing with and he would not let go, no matter how hard I tugged, I put him on his back, sideways, made him run around in circles but to no avail, his jaws were not moving, finally after about 10 minutes he got distracted for a second and I won the battle  Grin .

But I'm in awe of how strong his jaws are, is a bulldog's jaw strength comparable with a pit-bull's? I know they are descendants of bulldogs, does their reputation for having freakishly strong jaws come from their bullie heritage?

I would think so - bulldogs were bred to clamp down on bull jugulars and not let go until the bull was dead.  Not that I approve, but that's what it was about then.

Phats has a jaw of steel too... I've gotten her off the floor playing tuggie with her.  She's 62 pounds of tenacity and perseverance! Grin

As long as the game begins and ends on YOUR terms then you shouldn't have a problem.

If you google history of a bulldog you will see lots of stories of how bulldogs came about and what they are bred with down the lines...kinda interesting really.

I didn't know that either until I watched a National Geographic program where they tested it.

Quote
Domestic dogs: 320 LBS of pressure on avg. A German Shepherd Dog, American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT), and Rottweiler were tested using a bite sleeve equipped with a specialized computer instrument. The APBT had the least amount of pressure of the 3 dogs tested.

according to Brady Barr on Natinal Geographic.
