So one of the boys has been vomiting, so I decided to just go to the vet down the street.  We have a Bulldog vet we use 90% of the time, but if it's not a Bulldog-specific issue, we go here since this woman is 5 minutes away vs. over 30. Keep in mind, I went in for vomiting.

She proceeds to tell me that he is overweight and has rolls. Um, he's a Bulldog and weighs 42 lbs....which is quite small for the breed. She told me she knows better because she is the vet.  I told her I'm his owner and I think I know what's best. I assure you, I don't overfeed my dogs and they get plenty of exercise and a good quality diet.   The Bulldog vet saw him not that long ago and commented on how great he looked and what a nice waistline he had. She said the opposite.  Then, she told me to switch him to Science Diet weight formula.  Um, no. He's on Orijen and doing very well, no allergies, great poop, etc.  Why would I put him on a soy and corn based diet?

Then, she wanted to inspect his legs (I went in for vomiting) and plops him on his back.  When he wouldn't stay still, she screams, "I told you to stay still!"  The poor dog was terrified and ran to a corner and just shook. This is the dog that loves every single person he comes across....until today that is.   She also told me he had double ear infections that need to be treated ASAP because I "have neglected them for over a year it seems."  Yea, we've only had him for 4 months and he's been checked out by the Bulldog vet not too long without any issues.  The total she wanted?  $314...I bolted out of there, declined everything and never got an answer as to why he is vomiting, since she was too busy telling me how defective he is.

We were lucky to get an appointment with the Bulldog vet, went straight there and paid $37 for an exam.  He is not overweight, he does not have any ear infections (he even let me look to assure me), and he's vomiting most likely from something he ate but is otherwise completely fine. I treat my dogs like babies. If something is wrong, I know and take them in.  I've caught ear infections very early on in the past and he hasn't had any symptoms so I was skeptical.  I'm just venting as I've never had my dog treated in that way. I swear, vets pick up a book and think all Bulldogs are giant defects with $$$ attached to them.  Never, ever again will I step foot in that office!  That half hour drive is more than worth it.

What is it when they get an ear infection and the Vet tells you "you have neglected, your dogs ears??" I took Vegas in the VERY day I seen him rubbing his ear across the wall and carpet, I looked in his ear and it smelled, now mind you I check him out DAILY, his ear was not red inside but did have a smell. I took him to a non-bully vet (NEVER AGAIN it is worth the drive and my bully vet is CHEAPER than the old vet I was using) and was ALSO told he has had this infection for WEEKS??? Yea Right, I would say he was JUST starting to get one. I take VERY good care of Vegas and would NEVER let him suffer from anything that could be taken care of!!! He is treated extremely well and spoiled rotten!!

I was so tempted!  When she grabbed his wrinkles and said, "Look at all this excess fat," I wanted to tell her to look in the mirror.  Bulldog puppies are wrinkly. Some don't outgrow those wrinkles and mine is no different.  It's not fat, it's skin.  His waistline is visible, he runs and swims and plays and is happy.  I felt so bad for the whole experience that I took my chubster to the drive thru for a burger after!   Grin

You should have grabbed her fat/wrinkles and said, "And look at all of this excess fat/wrinkles!" What a nut job!

Holy cow! What an idiot! I hate walking into a vet's office and being looked at as a giant dollar sign. You'll have to PM me her name so we steer clear of her when get down there.

omg, i'm so sorry to read this but am a bit relieved as we are leading parallel lives. I have the same scenario --  local, non bully vet who is a tad clueless and a bully vet that is a great diagnostician (but harder to get apptmnt with and is an hour each way).

i'm glad your baby is ok, that's what counts!!!  Kiss

I PMd you the Bulldog vet's name.  He is awesome, inexpensive and great with the bullies. He's a half hour from us, but after today, he'll be the only one we see exclusively!

There are no 'Bulldog' vets here but I don't have a problem with the vets that I use. They always complement me on not having fat bullies and keeping my bullies (and fosters) healthy. I love my vets!  Cheesy

Can you report her to someone?

I have a vet that's been around for decades.  HE isn't the bully "expert" but he's good.  They also have a surgeon on staff who IS a bully "expert" - she does breed and show them and she was very helpful when we first adopted Meaty. Gave us alot of tips and guidance.

OK, so I MIGHT have ignored her admonition to never let him up on the couch.... or bed....  Tongue
