We have never used a crate with PC.  We got him at 8 weeks and he has never chewed anything and has been a dream since day one, so we had no experience with this crate thing.

Bring in MB, who we got at 11 months.  At first, we didn't have a crate but he would get all fidgety and panicky at night and we figured he misses his crate since we were told he always sleeps in one.  So, we bought a crate (a very large one because I felt bad if he did actually sleep in there) and I put 3 giant crate pads in there with him for comfort.  He loves that thing and gravitates toward it.  We never close the door, and he chooses where he wants to sleep at night.  He always chooses the crate and sleeps there with 3 crate pads and the door open.  He can go in and out as he pleases, but always picks the crate.

Here's the issue....he pees on the pads every single day.  We don't lock him in the crate, why would he be doing this?  We took him to the vet to make sure it's not medical and it wasn't.  He's also peed on PC's bed several times as well.  Any insight as to why he's doing it?  We are home during the day and he is let out every 1-2 hours.  He's one of those dogs that could never be in a home with a working couple because he seriously pees 20 times a day and poops about every 3 hours.  We're fine with that, since we're home but I assume it's part of the reason he was given up by his previous work away from  home family.

He's neutered and not a marker.  Goes out to pee all day long yet sometimes he'll come back from peeing outside, walk in his crate and go again!  My husband is beginning to get fed up with the daily several loads of laundry and removed all but one of the crate pads.  He peed all over that one and now he wants to remove them all.  I don't want him sleeping on plastic crate bottom, but I'm at a loss.  He still goes into the crate and sleeps despite the pads being taken out.   Any help is greatly appreciated!

no clue why he is doing it, but i wouldnt feel too bad about removing the crate pads. Fen is crate trained and went forever without any bedding in his crate. at first it was a potty training thing, but then when we first tried to introduce bedding in there he didnt like it - balled it up in a corner and slept on the plastic. even now, he has a very thin bed in there so it really isnt much padding but he still loves his crate.

It sounds like he is marking. Some dogs just mark bedding n not other areas both my dogs were crate trained n steeler still sleeps in his n they have never had any bedding in them. I think it's one of those things that matter to us not them lol. The only thing I can think of is to limit his water maybe try ice cubes so he ll drink at a slower pace n making a HUGE deal when he goes outside.

Is it still considered marking if it's a huge amount of pee?  I thought markers just sprayed a bit on an area to leave a scent.  He'll empty his entire bladder and soaks through all 3 pads, even if he just went out.  He also doesn't lift his leg, but squats. I know they neutered him ridiculously young, at around 4 months, so I'm sure that's why.  Funny thing, he won't do it overnight, ever.  Just during the day when he has ample access to the outdoors.  He sleeps for 10 hours straight without needing to go!

We left the pads out last night and I don't think anyone got sleep!  All we heard was him moving around and scraping against the crate bottom, making a ton of noise in the process.  There is a giant bed right next to his crate (we have 3 for them in the house), yet he still chose the empty crate over that!

Maggie, Brody was almost 3 when he stopped peeing on his bedding or random piles of towels or sheets!!  Gahhhh it was sooo frustrating!  I bought the belly bands which helped, but ultimately he had to grow out of it.  He never peed on anything that he hadn't slept on, and he eventually grew out of it if it gives you any hope.  I eventually gave in and just bought towels for him that we bleached daily  Tongue

I too have the same problem..but not just in the crate...they have fleecy type throws to lay on and they pee all the time...not sure why they are 4yrs old each and are both spayed...they have always done this.. But their mother who is 6yrs does this also. Maybe it is an inherited trait..but I agree with the other posts. I use lightweight bedding and towels that are bleached daily...guess some bullies just do it. But you still got to love them!

I'm just glad to hear it's normal! He's quite the character too.  When he pees on his bedding, he pushes it off to the side and sits on the dry side. Then, he looks at me as if to say, "Get to washing, woman!"  Bulldogs, gotta love 'em!   Grin

one of my dearest bully friends 8ftbed lovingly calls his girl "lizzie the crate pisser" she's almost 5 i believe. thats just who she is and he accepts and loves her for who she is. i believe mel has those issues with chubby also. every once in a blue moon harlow and/or steeler will give a squirt or two on their beds no rythme or reason. the older i get the more i learn the value of acceptance and picking your battles. when i was younger i was much more intolerant of people and things.

i so hear ya about the scraping around on the plastic.....in time he'll move around less, he needs to adjust to the absence of the pads. he will. steeler (who moves around alot, he's always busy lol) takes a couple of minutes to wind down and then he makes very little noise. i also became acustomed to the sound and i have to tell you i am very sound sensitive. its just house noise now.

as far as how much is a mark....no flippin clue, i know that sometimes steeler will pee over harlows pee and its quite a bit. other times not so much. who knows. just thinking out loud sort of speak, ha. i could be completely off base.

in the end i hope it all smooths out for you all n your hubby calms down.

Eddy & Leroy

« Reply #9 on: September 14, 2010, 09:16:53 PM »

Leroy has to be crated every night and whenever I go out to run errands.   I put blankets in his crate every night and once a week sanitize the whole lot of them.  Leroy is better since he's been crated, not peeing every nite, but who cares, at least its easy to clean becuz its just his bedding.

Eddy pees his bed but noplace else.  He's too lazy to get up I guess?  Eddy does this maybe 2x a week.
Drives me crazy, they are 2.5 years old.  The only thing I can think of is that I let them out too much as they grew up and maybe can't / aren't used to holding it?  DUNNO!

Well. I made by bi-annual attempt at putting the girls crate pads back in their crates. Violet just turned 4 and yup, she peed on it. Freida did not. She is less consistent than Violet. But they both pushed the bedding aside. Maybe they prefer their crates w/o the pad??? who knows.

Sorry to hear that!

I took MB's pads away.  He still chose to sleep in there (crate door open) instead of on the huge dog bed next to the crate.  However, we woke up to poop everywhere. On him, the walls, the floor, the furniture near his crate...I can't imagine it's because we removed the pad!  It's been a very fun morning here.

Oh, he's been fine!  Last night, I took him out first.  He peed and pooped and I brought him in.  Then, I took PC out.  I come back inside, and he pooped in his crate...after just going 2 minutes before.  This is new behavior and I'm thinking of starting to use the crate the way most people use them.  Put in a divider since his crate is big enough for a Great Dane and close the door at night. That way if he poops, he has to lay in it which I know he hates.  When he goes in the crate, he'll either move to the side without the poop or come out of the crate completely because I assume he doesn't want to sleep in it.  With the divider, he'll have no choice and if it's true that a dog won't go where they sleep, it should solve our issues.
