Hey everyone,

Ottis is almost four months old and I usually take him walking around the block twice a day (morning and evening).  It would take us about 8 minutes to complete it.  He is not a very good walker (stops a lot, sits down) which is the reason why we only make it around one time.  He is very calm for a bulldog puppy so it's not like we need him to burn energy, but I do want him to get his exercise.  I know bullies can't walk long distances, but I want to get an idea of how much more his chubby legs can potentially handle without straining him too much.  He's getting his rabies shot next week and we'll be good to go to the park off leash and hopefully get a better work out there. Thanks for the help!

I walk them until they start to huff and puff - usually that is around the 5 -6 block mark.

Unfortunately, to the sidewalk where he sits down and refuses to go any further.

Bullies or Bust!

I think some are active and love to walk. Others are just not into it.  For instance, my guy Auggie likes to walk once he gets going and if it is cool enough can go about a mile. That said, he'd much prefer a car ride.  Roll Eyes

Violet will not even walk down our driveway. Period.  Her issue is psychological--  fear based I think. Just this week I have given up on coaxing her into a walk. She clearly does NOT want to go. She too would prefer a car ride.

Freida likes to walk quite a bit but is having some respiratory issues and can only go a short distance--1/5 of a mile approx.  And yes, she prefers the car as well.

Dozer is 6 months old the 3rd of sept, and he is a high energy pup.  I walk him approx 1 mile twice a day.  He has enough energy he could pull me the first half of both the walks if i let him get away with it.  He has so much energy if i didnt take him for such long walks he would bounce off the couches and the walls and chew on the children.  But we have NO yard... like zilch.  Big enough to poop and pee in, but not for running or playing.  For some reason, if i take the same route each time he will get bored and literally stop every 5-10 feet and look at me like "why??"  But if i take him new/different routes he gets into the scenery and goes with pep and energy.  Last night we were gone for an hour (per mapquest, 2 miles) and he still had energy when he came home, and i was beat!  He is all English Bulldog (AKC even), but my coworker keeps telling me he's Olde English just because his nose isn't smushed into his face like the AKC show dogs want and he has so much energy.

We walk about 1 to 1.5 miles once or twice a day depending on the weather. if its to hot in the afternoon we play ball inside instead or do some mental stuff to tire them out. it takes us about 30 minutes, the last 10 min i let them take their time and "smell" the roses. lol

Molly and I go to trails around our area a couple times a week and do 2-3 miles walks.  Of course this is only when it is below the low 70's out.  Other days we just walk aound the park for 15-20 mins.  I carry lots of water and ice with me for her.

I walk Oscar for about 1 to 1.5 miles when HE wants to walk and the weather is ok for him....a couple of times a week.  I walk another of my dogs (Wickham) every morning and sometimes Oscar gets up and wants to go too, other times he just lays on the couch and keeps his eyes closed very tightly (to pretend he's sleeping).   I think Wickham likes it better when we leave Oscar at home because it slows down the speed of the walk by at least half Smiley  Oscar is 4.  At 4 months I don't think he liked to go on walks at all.

Eveybody has forgotten to mention that you shouldn't really walk your 4 month old too much - I'd say the amount you are doing at present is about right. I'm a great believer however in giving your dog lots of walks. As I'm not very bulldog experienced I've found that I may have walked our boy a little too much when he was younger - we'd sometimes be out for up to about five hours on a Saturday or Sunday (although that included travel time). Now he is four years old, despite some leg troubles, he still gets walked every weekday from 45 mins to about 1 1/2 hours, and usually gets walked on the weekend days about a total of 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day. But the pace of the walks is mainly leisurely, as we generally let him choose the walks, and go at his own pace - he sniffs and marks an awful lot! We go on a very large number of different walks for variety and our boy absolutely LOVES his walks!

When we have time I take Meaty for a good mile, mile and a half walk, at least 4 or 5 days a week.  OR I make one of the teenagers take him.

I work overnights, so I'm tired and hitting the pillow in the morning so we'll walk around later in the day, unless it's my day off.

I really need to take him to the beach - he seemed to love it at my sisters while I was on vacation.

Oliver and Annie

« Reply #11 on: September 27, 2010, 12:29:19 PM »

Oliver likes short walks now that he's nine months.  He's excited to go out, but about ten minutes into it, he will do more lagging behind than pulling ahead.  One of the neigobor's lawns is his favorite spot to stop, roll around in the grass and look at me as if to say " This is far enough, Dad.  You go home, I'll just stay here."  THAT isn't going to work, so I've learned to keep a cookie in my pocket, which gets him up and going again.  hmmmm, maybe he's got me trained to give him a cookie...  DARN it, that dog is smater than me!  :-)

We got down to the the beach Sunday - Annie loves to run up and down in the sand with quick spashes in the water.  Ollie just wades right in over his head and swims around, then back to shallow water for a nice long drink.  With winter coming, that might be the last foray to the river - we'll see.

Well we went to the park and he does perfectly fine there on and off leash he will walk, run and play, maybe it's just our neighborhood!  Undecided  It's usually the first 30 feet from our building door.  He must think "why go so far when we're so close to home"  Once we pass those 30 feet we're good to go! Ayy Ottis, only you know what goes inside your little fat head, I can only guess!
