Bullies or Bust!

« on: October 19, 2010, 07:44:08 PM »

Auggie has a tight bun tail and for a very very long time now he's had a raw looking spot under it. Whenever we go to the vet for something else, I'll have it addressed. We've tried Neo Pred powder and Pellitol cream--  neither did anything.  Now the vet has him on 2 weeks of antibiotics (Cele...something).  She cultured it and it is bacterial not yeast, so basically a hot spot. Still, 2 weeks on antibiotics seems a bit extreme. I hate giving him this many pills ...  what do you think?

I agree with you, 2 weeks of antibiotics seems overkill if the vet didn't find a specific bacterial infection.  What is he hoping to treat?  Usually antibiotics are prescribed for specific infections, but some doctors (mine included) are antibiotic happy.  Have you tried wiping the area with a baby wipe or wet wash cloth daily?  I know some Bulldogs have tails like that and they need to be cleaned.  Neither of mine does, so I don't have too much experience int hat department!

Dozers mom

There wipes you can get a walmart that are called boogie wipes there the greatest things ever! i use them after dozer goes to the bathroom and it keeps his bottom very clean! we have had no tail socket problems or bottom sores at all! I know it sounds weird to wipe the dogs bottom with wipes after going to the bathroom but it keeps it extra clean and no hot spots ( at least in my case). The boggie wipes are all natural, just saline water wipes no allergic reaction from dozer which is amazing hes allergic to everything haha

Try wipes every so often and keep the doggie from rubbing his butt on carpet or things like that.

Susan,
Simon has a really deep tail pocket. It was so infected when I adopted him. He was on antibiotic for that and his ears. Once those cleared up I continued to use the Malaket wipes on him. He hasn't had an infection with those. I use them on his nose rope too. He hates the smell, it has an apple cider smell to it. You would think I was killing him by his reaction. Baby wipes do not work on him, they work on Magoo but Simon's nose rope and pocket get really hot and sweaty, I think the Malaket wipes kill yeast. Good luck. Think of you often, I hope your babies are adjusting better now and you are getting some sleep.

If it were me, I would keep him on the 2 weeks if he found it was a bacterial infection. I agree some do hand the antibiotics out for the smallest things but with the bacteria found in there, I would do the full course. What can happen is if you don't take the whole course, you might not kill all the bacteria in there, then what could happen is the remaining bacteria can become immune to the antibiotic and create a "super infection" situation and then it it would be alot more difficult for the antibiotics to get rid of it. He would need a stronger and more potent antibiotic and probably a longer healing time. I know I did this to myself once and it was not fun!  Wink
I hope Simon's little bum feels better soon!   Grin

yes... bacterial infections DO need antibiotics.  Try cleaning well, then putting desitin (diaper rash ointment) on it.
