We went walking in a not much used rural walk late Sunday afternoon and came across a 2 week old bird on the path which had fallen from its nest. The Big Boy didn't even seem to notice it, so he is not much of a hunter! The little bird was in a pretty bad way, not moving and with closed eyes. We couldn't see a nest so took it home and made a nest for it in a cardboard box, and put it in the warming drawer, and fed it mashed cat food and boiled egg every couple hours, with some difficulty.

It was touch and go if it would make it through the night; however it started to get quite a bit better as time went on and started cheeping and opening its mouth for food. So that was a good sign (although the Big Boy thought the cheeping made it a bit of a toy).

Our daughter figured out it was a Tui fledgling. Tuis are one of the most striking native birds here. They are black birds with a white ruff collar, have a nice song and are quite good imitators. We have a mainland bird sanctuary (Karori Sanctuary) in our city (large area of bush with a vermin proof fence all round; our son has done some cartoons on their site about a stoat who is always scheming to get into the sanctuary but is always foiled). Our daughter rang the Sanctuary and they put her onto a local bird rescue person, who came and picked it up.

So I'm glad the little bird was getting a lot better and is now in good hands.
