My friend and coworker adopted a Bishon/Shiztu mix puppy.  He's only 10 weeks old, he's had him only since Saturday.  He arrived happy enough but almost immediately was vomiting and not eating. Thinking he was tired and dehydrated from traveling in the transport truck, he gave it a day for him to settle down.  Then took him to the vet on Tuesday.

Well he's been diagnosed with Parvo and is in ICU at the vet.

Has anyone gone through this? What's the general survival rate?  He's beside himself now, I can only find grim information through Google.

He'd lost alot of weight, in the area of a whole pound - between the medical paperwork and what he weighed in as at the vet.

I was suspect as to the reasons a family would buy this little guy from a breeder, only to turn around and give him to rescue - seemingly immediately. Angry

We had a Parvo case today at work on a puppy and there has been at least 3 so far this year. We don't see the really graphic cases like the vet I used to work for does. I will spare you the gory details. It's like worse than  the worst stomach flu you have ever had. It dehydrates the poor little guys so badly. IV fluids are a must. It can be quite expensive to treat and pups are sometimes euthanized due to cost.

I have heard vets say survival rate is 50/50 and from what I have seen I would have to agree.

Please have your dogs vaccinated against Parvo.

My friends' pup is still in ICU - the hospital has a "Parvo Room" a "Chemo Room" and such - he's still the same, but not worse, they're hoping for a turn around in the next day or so.

If he starts to show improvement he said they'll let him go home Sunday.  He's bleached his house down and all of "Petie"'s brand new bedding and toys already.

He notified the rescue group - they're going to have to contact everyone who's pups traveled with him and there were ALOT of puppies.  They might also help with the vet bill, which would be good it's already $4K.

I have seen many puppies have Parvo and get through it. Pretty, an APBT puppy from the Miami-Dade shelter, waws diagnosed on the day she was to be picked up by a friend of mine. Another friend picked her up from the shelter and brought her to a 24 hour vet in Miami. She was there for about ten days. She survived and is fine now. She is at my house and is doing great! I know some of the vets use Tamiflu to treat Parvo in connection with the anti-vomiting meds and antibiotics. Here is an article I found: http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=580&S=1&SourceID=42

Here are two articles on how to clean up after a dog with Parvo:  http://www.dailypuppy.com/articles/how-to-clean-a-yard-once-a-dog-has-had-the-parvovirus/e323f3a5-0da1-e3ba-1cef-6bdd41d26d96

http://www.dailypuppy.com/articles/how-to-sanitize-your-house--yard-after-parvo/98dc85d7-0c51-cf94-6405-dacf23b657a3

I hope your friend's puppy will be OK!

He's now getting "plasma". ??  Still in danger, still hoping for a turnaround.

The good news is they're moving into their new house soon and "Petie" hasn't been over to it so the yard isn't contaminated.  Just his bedding and such and that's been bleached already.  I'll give him the "how to sanitize your house" article too. Thanks!

The good news is apparently the rescue organization is picking up the vet's bill.

He hasn't even been with anyone person long enough to form any kind of "this is my family" bond.

He perked up today after having the plasma, even crawled into the Vet's lap, but she heard some rasping in his lungs now so is watching him for pnemonia.  He sure seems to be trying!

RIP Petie the Parvo pup.   He didn't make it. :-(

Apparently there's quite a Parvo outbreak in the Missouri area, where he came from.  Possibly from all the flooding?  I don't know.

He told his older son, has to work up to telling the 6yr old this weekend.

Thanks for your wishes for him, we knew he was really weak, and the vet did all she could.  She was the one person who he "knew" the longest.

I am so sorry to hear that.
Parvo seems to be pretty rampant here in the desert as well. Hank and Dulce are due for their parvo 3 rotations. They are coming up on 5yrs and 7 years and still we vaccinate. My boss believes that their are several breeds english bulldogs included that never fully develop immunity to parvo on their own.
