I made a friend today.
A big guy bounced into the room in front of me. I stopped to admire your huge head and green eyes. I was instantly charmed and reached out to stroke your blue and white fur. A tech handed me your leash. I dropped to my knees to hug you and you being much bigger than I as Neapolitan Mastiffs are dragged me several feet. We got acquainted for a few minutes.

Then in walked the doctor and I found out that you had been dropped off by your "owner" and she wasn't going to try anything that might help you. She was already gone. The doctor drew the needle. The tech held off your vein. I held your head rubbing your ears and telling you how handsome you are. I felt you leave. It was the least I could do for my friend.

He was so beautiful. I don't understand how she just  gave up and walked away.

Ugh!!

What was so wrong with this boy ?

He was lucky to have you hold him for this, even though it broke your heart all over again.

I don't have the specifics. He had been not eating for two days they said. Owner just gave up. I didn't see anything alarming on his records.

What is really sad is that isn't the first time I've held an animal that the owner left for euthanasia.  Yes, it broke my heart. I  had tears coming down my face and splashing the knees of my scrubs. My boss witnessed the scene. He never mentioned the tears if he saw them.
I think if this line of work fails to move you to tears once in awhile, it isn't the right job for you.

I completely understand. It killed me when I worked in a vet office and the owners would not stay with their pets when they were being euthanized. I would hold them and cry. Hell, I cried even if the owners were there.

I am so sorry this happened. I will never understand people who think animals are disposable. Hugs to you and thank you for loving that sweet boy and holding him.  Cry Cry Kiss Kiss

Oh wow!  Cry Cry I'm in my office with tears running down my face.. I totally didnt see that coming, but as I read on, I visualized it.. How sad! I couldnt do what you do.. I would take every animal home with me which I am sure you cant do right? If that owner walked away, and someone wanted to take him home, could they? Huh

If she had stayed around, i might have walked out with a mastiff. The euthanasia form was signed and paid for. It was too late.

We own our house. There is room.

Sometimes the vets will ask the staff if they will/can take one in that still has quality of life. We can't save them all though.

That really did need a kleenex warning but the last day of his life was also the luckiest because he met a friend in you with kind eyes full of love and a soothing voice so the last thing he saw and heard was the love of his new friend. Thank you for being there for him. Kiss

you know.. I can fight fires, pull people from car wrecks, clean up hazardous materials spills, work really nasty cardiac cases in the back of the ambulance......... There is no way I could do what you do.... I do not have the guts for that..   I understand that its one of those jobs that has many great days, but still...

bless you for it..
