Penguin is putting on weight and getting fesitier. The zoo is working on cooling down their saltwater pool so he can get out of his little room and have a swim - should happen this week.

That's great. I stopped by my work on Friday(my off day) to pay my tab. The front desk informed me that a pelican had been brought in and would be transported  far north of Tucson. We think he came in from Mexico wihich is about 40 minute drive from my job.

Funny how some animals go astray. They are having a lot of trouble with a ferret which has somehow swum out to Kapiti Island, a bird sanctuary around here which is some miles offshore. I know there are some ferret lovers on this site but I am afraid they are pulling out all the stops to catch it (at a possible cost of around a hundred thousand dollars!)

Anyway - the Emperor Penguin has finally had his first swim in a saltwater pool at the zoo which I think is great as he must have been going stir crazy a bit in that little refrigerated room he was being held - http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/5336902/Happy-Feet-hits-the-pool

Video - the pool is pretty small for a penguin who swam thousands of miles in the open ocean but at least it's a start!

Penguin on its way back - is going to be dropped off near Campbell Island (about 500 miles south of New Zealand), near the northern extremity of the range of where Emperor Penguins are usually found. I don't think this is far south enough myself, but hopefully he can find his way back to the Antarctic from there!

Penguin now released - hope all goes well for him! (There is a tracker to watch his progress)
