Brutus

« on: September 28, 2011, 06:29:31 PM »

Brutus has a skin growth that needs to be removed. One of the vets (not the one we normally see) suggested using dexdomitor to sedate him to remove it (the growth is about the size of a pea and is on Brutus's side). Has anyone had any experiences with dexdomitor (dexmedetomidine hydrochloride)? It is a synthetic alpha2 -aadrenoreceptor agonist with sedative and analgesic properties (I got that from the info sheet). It is reversed with Antisedan (atipamezole). The vet we normally see had said Brutus would probably just need a localized anesthesia shot since he is so mellow. I'm trying to find out the risk associated with each option. To me the local seems much safer but I don't want Brutus to be subjected to unnecessary pain/stress.

Thanks!

I am a vet assistant and we use Domitor frequently. We like it because it is reversible and the animals come out of it quickly. But, IMO,  if your normal vet thinks he can do it with just a local, I would go that way. Sedation always has side effects, for us and our furbabies. I hope everything is OK!  Kiss

I believe Axel has been put under that to remove a broken tooth and did great with it until they gave him morphine....that made him sick, but not the drug and it was not a planned procedure so he had eaten that morning, hence the puke!!
