60 Puppies Perish in Mass. Trailer Fire
By Associated Press

LOWELL, Mass. - A trailer carrying dozens of puppies to Northeast pet stores caught fire just off an interstate, killing all of the estimated 60 dogs inside, authorities said.

The driver first noticed smoke coming from his trailer just before 5 p.m. Monday, state police said. He pulled over, and the Lowell Fire Department put out the flames that engulfed the trailer, but they couldn't save the puppies.

The puppies were a variety of breeds between the ages of 8 and 12 weeks, according to a state police news release.

Neither the driver, identified as Joseph Price, 40, of Joplin, Mo., nor his passenger, William Iriarte, 50, of Nesho, Mo., was injured.

A preliminary investigation indicated that a malfunctioning fan in the rear of the trailer may have started the fire, police said. No charges have been filed.

The truck was owned by the Hunte Corp. of Goodman, Mo., a major puppy supplier for pet stores.

"The puppies were all beautiful, healthy purebreds that were on their way to quality retailers in the northeast and eventually to loving New England families," the company said in a statement. The company said it has a near-perfect safety record.

Lordy, Lordy...  I went and googled  'Hunte Corp. MO'
bam, bam, bam... the dirt fell out of the rafters like we're getting shook by an 8.0 earthquake.

here's a snippet...
"Hunte Corporation, which also exports dogs overseas, is the largest puppy broker in the United States. The company has been linked to a number of negligent pet stores and breeders such as the Ohio-based PETLAND, INC.

Over the last three years the United States Department of Agriculture has loaned the company more than $4 million for expansion and upgrades

I wonder if this place is on PETA or ALF's radar yet,  not that either of them are on my  Christmas card list.   Sometimes an ill tempered junkyard dog could come in handy running down a bad guy.

My heart break for these furry babies. God rest their little puppy souls but I am sure that they are at a better place.  I have been to a petland store one time and the bully baby they had there was priced at 3500.00 and he looked so sick.  Weepy, dull eyes.  Kinda lethargic.  When I asked the kid that worked there about the puppy and why he was like that...i was told that is how bulldog puppies are.  They are lazy dogs...not very active.  OMG....I could of died.  I left there crying and have never been back into a petland since.

That is sooo sad...It's a shame they couldn't...Use some sort of jaws of life and cut the front of the trailer open to try and save a few...Poor babies...They were shuffling in that trailer...surely fearful anyways...To die that death...Just is devastating...To my heart... Cry Cry Cry

I went to the local Petland here once to check on the bullie puppy, also.  It did not look well at all. I left in tears, also and have never been back. I tell everyone I know NOT to go there as those are puppymill puppies.
