Does anyone know how long it takes to become a vet and how they then become a bulldog specialist?

Since I have one more daughter who wants to go to college and will need help,  I might start talking to her about this.   It seems like it may be a lucrative position. The bulldog specialists seem  few and far between and if you find one, it's hard to get into see them.  Since we willingly  (in general)  part with large sums of cash to take good care of our bullies,  Nicole may as well make some cash.

Veterinary studies generally come after completion of a four-year undergraduate college experience. We have an option whereby students can apply for admission after completion of a minimum of 60 s.h. (two to three years) of college course work, including specific prerequisite courses. Only a very few students choose this option and only a very few are admitted under it. Completion of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree requires four years of additional study.

Hey, that's not that bad.  I've got at least 7 years left, and I already have my BA... and I'm sure a vet will make more than me!

I think with most bulldog specialists (as opposed to like surgical specialists) are just regular DVMs who have a lot of experience with bulldogs... at least, that's the case with any "bulldog specialist" I've ever spoken to.  That's good though, because one of the vets in our practice is not too familiar with bulldogs, so whenever she sees an x-ray of Carl, she becomes very alarmed (also, she is kind of evil.)

That's right, there is no such thing as a bulldog specialist...i.e. there is no board certified speciality for that.  They are vets who happen to see a lot of bulldogs in their practice and word travels that they are good and know the breed's little quirks.  It also helps that they often have the patience and skill with dermatology issues...which some vets don't.

7 more years?   What will you be when you grow up?

For some reason, Nicole has had her hat set on going to Kendall college and becoming a 'Pastry Chef' now for 2 years.  I've never tried to sway the kids' preference as long as they had a goal and was steadily heading for it.  Doesn't matter how much you make if you don't look forward going to work each day.

Since she's fallen so in love with Chubbs, I still might run it past her. Get her Pastry Chef degree then become a bully vet.  I can have more than one bully then and when I take one to see her....  there better be some good snacks in the waiting room!!   Grin

Lindsay, that's my goal too - especially since one of my job perks is a free education.. I'm gonna be a professional student... I don't know what I want to be when I grow up either!! Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

As far as vet school, I do know it's harder to get into the Univ of Pennsylvania's vet school than it is to get into their medical school!!!  WOW!!

hmmmmmmmmmm.  pastry cheif vs vet.  that is a hard one as a parent.  One one hand it would be GREAT. to get free care for your bully.  But then again PASTRY.  I like the idea of both.  Then maybe she could also make special pastry for puppies and sell them at her vet practice.  even more money.   Grin
