BULLY Momma to Mabel

« on: July 01, 2004, 05:09:04 PM »

I thought this was all a done deal but guess not.  What have any of you in CA heard?  This is the latest information I have received:

Forwarded for ABC Pres. John Connolly from Patti Strand, author of "The Hijacking of the Humane Movement":
Virginia Zurflieh
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------

I spoke to a couple CA insiders last night and I have updated our alert at
www.naiatrust.org  to reflect some changes in our strategy. Please read  the
update and post the link to your lists.  We had believed based on  previous
information that if the CVMA didn't budge there would be no chance  to
remove the amendment. I was told by someone who works in the CA  legislature
that the letters are having an effect and that we should  redouble our
efforts.  Although the CVMA will not change their  position, the more vets,
and voters generally that Figueroa's office hears  from the better.  They'd
been led to believe that only a couple  Neanderthals actually supported
cropping.  They are getting their eyes  open.

California is broke. The appropriations committee needs to  understand that
even though they're not being asked to fund this bill, local  DA's are going
to get stuck with the expense of enforcing a useless piece of  legislation
that will take money away from critical issues.

Forwarded for ABC board member, Sandy Orr:

Here is an update that was forwarded to me.  They have set a date for  the
next step in August.  We still need to send letters.  The link  takes you to
the page with all the  info.

Sandy

Keeping  up with this California thing has been hectic but right on top of
what's  happening is Patti Strand at NAIA [National Animal Interest  Alliance]

Here is someones argument that it will cost money not save for CA.

Forwarded for ABC Pres. John Connolly:
Virginia Zurflieh

These are good economic points to make when writing Lawmakers:

California is going broke and enforcing SB 1548 would cost California
taxpayers! Lawmakers who support this bill with the cropping provision left in  are
picking the pockets of California taxpayers for a frivolous and  unjustifiable
reason. Lawmakers that vote for this low priority "feel good"  provision
thinking it won't ever be enforced, should think twice before voting  yes. The
history of radically inspired bills shows that zealots often sue for  enforcement
of their pet laws. In a state where law enforcement budgets are  having
trouble keeping up with crimes such as murder, rape, robbery and drug  abuse,
forcing district attorneys to go after veterinarians for cropping ears,  using
state of the art procedures and drugs, is absurd and disrespectful of the
priorities of California taxpayers. Enforcing SB 1548 would take time and  resources
away from serious law enforcement issues where government has a  legitimate
role to play.
Making ear cropping illegal would chase money out  of California! Passage of
SB 1548 would send revenues now earned by California  veterinarians to vets in
adjacent states. Ear cropping is a veterinary specialty  practiced by a
relatively small number of veterinarians, but these specialists  devote a
significant part of their practice and earn a significant part of their  income by
providing this procedure. Making it illegal for them to perform this  procedure
will cause many of their clients to travel to other states where it is  legal,
depriving California vets and the California economy of income.
Senate Bill 1548 harms the welfare of California dogs.

I am sure  you are all aware by now that California Senate has passed
SB-1548 and it is  going to the Assembly. This bill would ban ear
cropping and it is possible it  might even prevent the showing of
cropped dogs.  Three important  elements.
1. The anti cropping amendment was added at the last minute,  most of
the Senators did not even know it was in the bill.
2.  Therefore there has been no debate on the issue.
3. There will be an  economic impact upon California if this bill
should become law.
It is quite apparent that this amendment was a midnight addition by
Animal Rights people or their friends.  It is very important that this
bill be defeated now. The long range fall-out from such a law would be like
a
creeping virus moving from state to state. This is what happened in
Europe which has already banned cropping, docking and dew claw removal
in many countries.
The American Boxer Club, Doberman  Pinscher Club of America,
Great Dane Club of America have already put  forward $5000 each, The
Giant Schnauzer Club of America and the Miniature  Club have pledged
$1000, Saucon Valley Boxer Club is sending $200 and Boxer  Club of
Arizona is sending $300. These funds are going to pay a lobbyist  firm
to try and have this amendment removed before it becomes law. The fee
for the lobbyist firm is $25,000.
I am asking each  Boxer Club to donate $100 or more toward this
effort,
and all  members to donate at least $25 same as an entry fee for a show.
In  addition keep writing letters and sending emails to the California
Assembly.  The bill did not make it before the July recess, giving us
another month to flood them with OPPOSITION.  Be sure to  address
each communication with "OPPOSITION SB 1548" at the top. All  Boxer
Club and member donations should be sent to our Treasurer Sharon
Steckler, 1822 Eldridge Road, Sugar Land, TX 77487-2516.
ACT  NOW.

Susan, great catch what the “heck” is going on in my state, helloooo people lay off the animals and take care of the real issues.!!!!!!
Let rescue help out with all animals and stop killing animals just to save money.  Or holding auctions to make more money off sick and helpless animals.
Maybe they need to take a good look at them selves and wonder why they pick on bean’s that can’t talk back.  Basturds... sorry....  But why don’t they look around at all their lovely Million dollar homes and the little taxes they pay?Huh And they wonder why Cal is so broke?HuhHuh??  Maybe if they donated what they spend on just lunch, for a week we could help save some animals, instead of taking more of their rights away.
Just think how much money the storeowners etc make in a weekend while we host dog shows??? Think of the money lost to the small mom and pop stores that sell animal, dog stuff.... Who are the losers Huh The animals and the residents of Cal.
