There is a product you can buy at the pet supply called quick stop...it goops up on the end of the nail and stops it instantly.  I think there are other things you can use around the house too...but I am not quite sure what they are...  I use the quick stop...  It works great!

Sharon, THANK YOU!

That article was GREAT!  I already have the stuff, cause I do Birdie's (my B&G macaw) nails that way :D

He doesn't like it so much, but I can wrap him in a towel and render him defenseless... he gets over it, but has a habit of blurting out profanities when I let him out.. HE LEARNED DAT FROM HIS DADDY!  hehehehehehe

If you cut the nails too short and they start to bleed (quick them), you can use flour or stick the nail in a bar of soap. Cheap ways that you already have at home to stop the bleeding!  ;) :D

This is great!  I see the light now!  When I first heard about dremel, I thought that it might hurt more than clipping. Now that I have seen it, I can see that it is more like filing!  Brilliant!

I am sold!  I must get to a hardware store!

I'm bumping this up again.  We started using the Dremel for Maggie's nails.  She's almost at the point that it doesn't bother her although it's still a 2 person job just to make sure she stays still.

I'm still amazed how short I can get Maggie's nails -- they look awesome and it doesn't look like her toes are landing improperly on the floor because of too long nails.

I have a question about using a dremel.  I read that by using a dremel it eliminates the problem of cutting the quick?  So does that mean you can dremel the nail down shorter then cutting it and not worry about the quick?  Or do you still have to stop before you get to the quick?

You still have to stop before getting to the quick, but using the Dremel lets you get closer than if you were using clippers -- you can get really close.  With the Dremel you won't necessarily cut the quick, but you could sand it too close.
