Help! Buddy's ears
« on: February 23, 2004, 04:55:36 PM »
I got home from work today and Buddy's ears looked really bad.  I normally clean them out once a week but they are always very clean and pink.  Today they are all gunked up with what is either blood or a redish wax.  I'm sorry if I sound silly but I don't know what dogs earwax looks like.  I can't figure out why yesterday his ears were perfect and today they look horrible.  They kind of stink too.  Is this an ear infection possibly?  I tried to clean them a minute ago but there is so much in there that you can't even tell I wiped them out.
Any ideas???  Is this something I should rush him to the vet for?
Thanks so much!

How dark is the gunk?  Usually the gunkwill look like coffee grounds if there is any dried up blood in the ears.  This can be a common symptom of ear mites.

Another possibility is a yeast infection.  What are you using to clean the ear canals?  I' suggest using some Epi Otic.  It's great stuff.

The gunk is a brownish red.  It did look like coffee grounds on the babywipe when I wiped some of it off.  I use 8in1 ear cleansing liquid.  It's a combination of propylene glycol, malic acid, salicylic acid and benzoic acid.
Should I try and clean it out better and watch to see if it gets better?  I don't know what ear mites are but they sound gross.  I'm thinking this is probably something I'm going to need the vet for.  I wish he wasn't an hour and a half away.
Thanks James,
Lissa

It does sound like ear mites - the vet can tell you for sure.  Is Buddy scratching alot?  That's another sign of mites, and well yeast too.  How's that for a helpful diagnosis?  :P

Ear mites (think tiny bugs) can get inside the ear canal.  You need a special treatment to get rid of them.

There are some over the counter mitacides that contain pyrethrin (sp?), an insecticide.  We usually order ours from DrsFosterSmith.com so not really sure what you can find at the pet store.  We've had good luck with them in the past.

Thanks for your help James.  I have an appointment this evening for Buddy to get in.  I hope it's not mites.  I can't imagine how he could have possibly gotten them.  I will let you know when I get home.

Update: Buddy's ears

It's not mites - thank God ;D
He has the start of a double ear infection but it didn't get down into the ear drum which is good.  I have stuff to put in his ears for a week or so.
He also got some topical ointment for his facial acne and a months worth of cephalexin to help with the acne.  $150 later we're all set.
Oh yeah and he weighs 64lbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!  He was only 45 in November.
My big sweetheart!

I am glad to hear that you've got your answer.  I was just thinking about Buddy and came here to post and ask you about him.

He'll be better in no time!

64lbs....he's a big boy for sure.

My baby had gunky ears and I thought it was wax.  The vet said it was a yeast infection either due to a food allergy or seasonal allergies.  He advised me to switch his food, which I did to Flint River Ranch.  He also gave me some Otibiotic ointment to put all in the creases of the inner ear for 2 weeks.  His ears are now pink and clean all the time!

My vet also gave me a solution for facial acne.  Wet a paper towel with Listerine and wipe his face with it.  It usually clears the acne up.

Since you mentioned the facial acne thing - Buddy had it SO bad.  His face was like one hige zit.  We tried everything and nothing worked.  Our vet gave us this stuff called Pyobel Gel and we just put it on once a day.  He hasn't had one outbreak in three months.  I guess the gel is actually for hair folical infections but it works really well.
I have heard a lot of people say listerine works for them.  We didn't have any luck with it but that was probably because Buddy's was so bad when we tried it.
